Book Notes: Deep Work

  • Deep work is very important in many professions
  • There are jobs where deep work is not important, for example if you’re CEO of a large enterprise
  • In today’s world, we are full of distractions and we don’t value deep work enough
  • Deep work is getting more and more rare and therefore more and more valuable
  • People fight desires/distractions all day.
  • Willpower is limited and will drain the more distractions you fight.
  • We need routines and rituals to have to use less willpower to not fall for distractions.
  • Great deep workers are famous for their routines.
  • Think weeks, work retreats, and similar in different environments can be a great help.
  • Schedule relaxing time.
  • The ability to focus deeply is a skill that must be trained.
  • Embrace boredom.
  • To learn to focus well, you need to, one, learn to concentrate better and, two, learn to overcome your desire for distraction.
  • Practice “productive meditation”.
    • Doing the excercise or taking a walk focus yourself on one thought. When you get distracted, get back to the thi fight.
    • Do this three times a week to improve your ability to focus.
  • Memorizing exercises train your brain and your ability to focus.
  • Reduce social media usage.
  • Track your work time and analyze how much deep work you’re doing.
